Dance Instructor and Oncologist Make a Great Team

Written by Brightspark Travel
from the National Performing Arts Festival to dancing with the stars

We’re constantly inspired by our group leaders’ stories, and dance studio owner Mitzi Roberts is no exception. We met Roberts when she brought her troupe to the National Performing Arts Festival and we thought her amazing story was worth sharing.

Mitzi Roberts has always gone above and beyond for her students and her community. Three years ago, she launched “Dancing with the Mankato Stars,” an event that raised funds for the American Red Cross. For this fundraiser, community “stars” worked with instructors from Robert’s studio to create polished performances.

In October of 2013 Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer—but she didn’t let that stop her from planning the 2014 Dancing with the Mankato Stars event. During her chemotherapy sessions with oncologist Kevin Cockerell, she retained a positive, active attitude, in part thanks to his support.

By the third annual Dancing with the Mankato Stars event in 2015, Roberts was back in action and ready to compete. Her partner?  Dr. Kevin Cockerell.

The pair received a perfect score for their “Lady Gaga Waltz”. In an even bigger win, the event raised a total of $150,227.22 for the American Red Cross.
